We got up at 6:30 and got ready. We left Duck Lake Lodge at 7:30 to head to Nell’s for breakfast. I had a bagel with scrambled egg and cheese on it and hash browns. We headed to Fishercap Lake to check for moose. We saw a bull moose in the lake!
We then started our hike to Iceberg Lake later than planned. It was 11.5 miles!
There was a lot of walking uphill and it was hot. I was glad I had worn a tank top. We got to Ptarmigan Falls and took some pictures before continuing our hike.
We guessed where the lake was going to be and we were right. Right before the lake, we walked through a beautiful wildflower area. It was extremely picturesque.
We saw a small lake below Iceberg Lake. I had been looking forward to seeing Iceberg Lake since I first read about it when researching this trip. It did not disappoint! There were tons of icebergs and ice and snow chunks floating in the water.
Some people were swimming out to the ice and standing on it. We ate lunch and then I used my water filter to refill my water bottle and Dana’s. I ended up drinking a total of 74 ounces on this hike! Tammy and I decided that we would wade out to the closest chunk of ice and get pictures on it. The water was absolutely frigid and standing on the iceberg was no better. Our feet went numb within seconds of entering the water and it was almost too much to take. Mike and Dana took videos and pictures of us. The funny thing was that there were two girls probably about 8 and 10 and they had gone back and forth to the iceberg 9 times (they were counting). They did it quickly without complaining. Tammy and I might have been squealing from the cold.
Mike also went in and stood on the iceberg. He looked like he was trying to surf because the iceberg was rocking back and forth.
We dried off and put our hiking shoes back on and started heading back. I used the pit toilet. The way back seemed long, but it was totally worth it. It was almost five by the time we got back. We went straight to Nell’s for dinner. Tammy and I had chicken Caesar salad which was great. Mine took a really long time to arrive. We needed to be back to Duck Lake Lodge by 7 so we could get online to get a reservation for Many Glacier for the next day or else we would have to enter the park before 6am. I got my food in time to eat quickly before heading out. We made it back in plenty of time. Mike, Tammy, and I all tried to get a pass, but Mike got one first. There were 213 passes available when we first saw the amount right at 7:00 and by the time it was 7:02, they had all sold out!
We showered and played Skip-Bo downstairs. This was one of the decorations in the lodge:
We had fun. Then we headed upstairs. I sent myself some of Tammy’s photos from her phone before going to bed around 10.
