Tammy got up and went to breakfast. I got ready and tried to go see the Glacier Bay National Park rangers board, but after waiting a half hour, we were told that they boarded early and you couldn’t really see it through the fog.
I went to breakfast to meet Tammy, not she had already left. The message app wasn’t working very well. I ate breakfast and then went to the crow’s nest for the ranger welcome. The rangers told us about the wildlife we might be able to see. I got to pet the fur of several animals (brown bear, moose, sea lion, and sea otter). The sea otter’s fur was incredibly soft!
We saw a coastal brown bear walking along the shore.
Tammy was up there too, but I didn’t find her until afterward. We worked on our crossword while we listened to the scenic narration. They served Dutch pea soup to everyone. We went to lunch at 11:45 so we could finish and go out to see the Margerie Glacier at 12:30. We must have gotten to the Margerie Glacier a little early because we watched it while we ate. We went out on the deck and watched from deck chairs. We got to hear the “white thunder” sound that comes from the glacier, but we didn’t get to see it calve. Too soon we left.
We spent the afternoon watching for wildlife. We saw lots of sea otters floating on their backs and many sea lions swimming. We saw some harbor seals floating on an ice floe. We saw one puffin.
At 3:30, we went to the World Stage and heard the park ranger talk. She was followed at 4:00 by a man named Fred who was part of a native people group. He shared about his mother’s perspective of Glacier Bay.
We went back outside to watch for sea lions. We saw them on South Marble Island.
We went to eat dinner in the Lido Market and then went back outside to watch for whales. We were able to see a whole pod of humpback whales near the shore. There were several whale watching boats near them.
We watched them as long as we could and then we went inside for team trivia. When that was over, we went to game night in the Rolling Stone Lounge. They used members of the audience to compete. It was fun to watch. My favorite game was when one person from each team had to guess what movie the audience was acting out. It was very funny. When that was over, we headed back to our room to get ready for bed.
