We got up today at 6 and got ready. We went to breakfast at 7. I had scrambled eggs, a cinnamon roll, V8, coffee, and cantaloupe. We were already in port so we watched people walking around. The environment was totally different in the Lido Market today! Everyone was in a rush and the staff seemed stressed and couldn’t keep up with the demand for table clearing.
We went through customs, which really meant just handing a lady our Canada declaration form. We never even had to show our passports. We got in line for a taxi. It was very long, but the process was extremely organized and went fast. We took a taxi to the Amtrak train station so we could leave our luggage.
The people at the Amtrak station were super helpful and took our luggage. It only cost $5 a piece instead of $10 which is what it said online.
We decided to go to Queen Elizabeth Park to walk around so we took an Uber there. Thankfully Tammy can use her phone in Canada. We walked around the park and took some pictures. There were beautiful flowers.
Next, we took an Uber to Granville Island Public Market. We walked around before deciding on a burger place. I got a grilled BBQ chicken burger with salad. It was very crowded. I saved our table while Tammy waited for our food. A man came to join me at our table. He was probably in his 70s and was a character. He works as a tour guide. He told us lots of random stories while we ate.
We walked around the market area and walked along a trail to get away from the congested area before calling an Uber. Tammy’s phone had trouble connecting to the internet, but thankfully it worked and we were able to get an Uber back to the train station in plenty of time. We picked up our luggage and waited in a long line to board. The man who was going to keep people board was not very nice. He kept yelling at people whose suitcase was over 50 pounds at all. Tammy’s was a little overweight so she rearranged and put some things in her backpack. My suitcase was 47.2 pounds. The family behind us had tons of heavy suitcases, but somehow they managed to get all their stuff rearranged. Many people coming in from cruises had had their flights cancelled and were scrambling to figure something else out. The line went quickly when it eventually started moving. Tammy’s suitcase weighed 50.4 pounds and the person said they would let it slide this time but next time they wouldn’t. They told us to have one of us take the luggage to the back of the train while the other saved seats. Tammy took our suitcases and I saved the seats.
There were a lot of coughing people on the train. The ride was about two hours and we had to stop at the US border to go through customs. We stayed on the train and a customs agent came through the train. After we crossed the border, it didn’t take long to get to Bellingham.
Tammy’s Aunt Sandra and Uncle Kelvin met us at the train. We got our luggage and they drove us to their beautiful house on the side of a mountain with a view of the bay below with islands and mountains. They have a scope that the use to see seals on the rocky island below. We also got to see a bald eagle baby in a nest and its parent nearby.
We had salad and sausages for dinner and chatted. We were both pretty tired so we went to bed early. We each have our own room with a beautiful view.
